The one about dueling phones…
Well it is nearly time to refresh my cell phone. My trusty Treo 700p has been with me since early 2005, and has seen better days. Do I go corporate (BlackBerry), Popular (iPhone), forward-looking (Android), or niche (OpenMoko)Don’t get me wrong my Treo has mostly worked, the software is reasonably stable. There is really no technical reason to refresh, my treo does everything I need when I don’t have/don’t need/etc a full size computational device. There are 2 competing concepts that are weighing into my selection:
- Do I want a Phone with a browser, and email (BlackBerry Bold/Storm)
- Do I want a iPod with a Phone, browser, and email (iPhone)
First and foremost, the BlackBerry is a business tool. It does email like nobody’s business, but the browser has not been the strongest. The iPhone is first and foremost a personal media player with a phone. It has a game-changing interface and the 3G had some business features introduced (PIM sync, remote wipe, etc). 3rd party app management is different between them as well. BB allows users to install apps (there are several distributors as well) as well as BES push; whereas Apple tightly controls the AppStore, and that is the only supported and “official” distributor. Carrier choice is also different, as ATT is the only “supported” carrier for the iPhone, whereas BB is available on other carriers as well.
The other consideration is that Vanessa is working on developing iPhone apps.
That is it for now!
